The French-Indian War
There had been fighting over land for quite some time, but in 1754 fighting broke out again and the conflict was named THE FRENCH INDIAN WAR. The British settlers wanted more room! They needed land for their farms. GEORGE WASHINGTON led the British troops (that's right he was British back then!!!!) in the fight for the OHIO RIVER VALLEY.
At first the French were winning because they had the support of the Native Americans. (Only the Iroquois Indians sided with the British.) In order to win, the British need more money for troops and supplies. William Pitt, a member of the British PARLIMENT (government,) raised money towards the war. This money helped the British to win. Pittsburg is named after William Pitt.
British won the war and France was forced to leave Canada. Britain took all of the land up to the Mississippi River. (Spain owned land on the other side of the Mississippi and Florida, "the flowered place," as well.) This agreement over land was settled in the Treaty of Paris which officially ended the French Indian War.
Britain won! France left. Were the Native American Indians happy? Of course not! Pontiac, an Ottawa Indian chief, encouraged the Native Americans to continue to fight the British even without France's help. This was called Pontiac's War. The Native Americans were not strong enough to defeat the British, but they did make a lot of problems for the British and the continuous fighting was costing Britain a lot of money.
Britain (also called England) issued the PROCLAMATION OF 1763. It ordered settlers to stay on the eastern side of the Appalachian Mountains. They hoped that this would keep the Native Americans happy by allowing them all the land on the other side of the Appalachian Mountains. Some settlers obeyed the laws, but others moved westward (over the mountain) anyway.
