2. in july 1776, the colonies declared independence from Britain. Congress voting to approve the declaration of independence marked the colonists' final decision regarding their relationship with the british.

THOMAS PAINE WRITES IN LANGUAGE THAT ANYONE CAN UNDERSTAND. He spreads the ideas of the enlightenment.
Common sense gets many of the colonists thinking that maybe it is time to "break up" with England.
And so the Continental Congress meets again. This time they will debate whether or not we should formally declare our independence from England.
This is scary because if we loss the war these men will be declared Traitors!
A traitor is a person who betrays his or her country. By declaring independence they have betrayed the british! They will be hung! They are brave!
The declaration of independence has four parts: 1. The preamble, (introduction) 2. The natural rights of Man, 3. Grievances, the wrongs of the British, 4. resolution, declare our independence. (some people say there are only 3 parts because they do not count the preamble, since it is basically the topic sentence.) ***Check your two-column notes and class activities for more information on these parts
The preamble states that it is time for the colonists to leave the british because they had not received what was due to them. This is the introduction to our break up letter to King georgie!
